In the Wilderness

November 04, 20234 min read

Sometimes in life, we can get hit unexpectedly by the hardest, life-altering tragedies, like the death of a loved one, a marriage relationship ending, or a major illness. It is in these times that our souls naturally cry out for help from the Divine because the pain can be so heavy that you feel the pressure of your soul being crushed. These experiences are what we are going to call, being “in the wilderness.”

Why is it that we all have to go through the wilderness at some point or another?

We are going to look into the Scriptures to see the reasons why God takes us into the wilderness and what His purpose is for us while we are there.

6 Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments: 7  And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8  And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the LORDExodus 6:6-8

Consider this…

If you think about your life from the time you were young, living without major consequences, until now as a young adult or grown adult, there was a time when we all were under the bondage of “the Egyptians.” Of course, we are speaking in a symbolic sense and not literally a slave to a Pharaoh. We have all had some besetting sin that the Lord was trying to remove from us. Imagine if He just grabbed it from us arbitrarily. Yes, we would no longer have that sin, but the desire to do that sin would not have been removed. So if the opportunity presented itself, we would most likely give in. God is far wiser than this, and in His infinite wisdom, He uses the wilderness to teach us why we need to let go of all sins,

And thou shalt say unto him, The LORD God of the Hebrews hath sent me unto thee, saying, Let my people go, that they may serve me in the wilderness:

Exodus 7:16

If you really think about what God wants for us, then we have to think back to Genesis 1-2. God made a perfect world, filled it with perfect animals and plants, and then He finished the job by giving it all to perfect people. But they did not have perfect trust in the Creator and because of that, we are left with the world we live in today. Albeit it is not going to stay this way. Jesus has promised that He will take us from this place to a place that He, Himself is preparing for us so that where He is, we will be also. But in order for us to be prepared to live in that place, we must all go on the journey through the wilderness.

What is in the wilderness?

What is in the wilderness you might be asking? In the wilderness is absolutely no earthly or human support. There are no abundant gardens, or grocery stores from which to get your sustenance. There are no springs nor bubbling creeks to get your water from. The more you complain about the wilderness when talking to your family, friends, and the strangers you meet about your experience in the wilderness, the further the edge of it seems to drift into the distance.

What is in the wilderness then you might ask? Jesus.

Jesus is in the wilderness, but if you do not have eyes to see nor ears to hear, then you will not realize that He is there with you and your experience in the wilderness will be in vain.

Jesus was led by Spirit into the wilderness where He spent 40 days without any earthly support at all, not even food. He had to rely wholeheartedly upon His Father in heaven for everything.

Something that we can all learn from Jesus’ experience in the wilderness is that when His time there was almost finished. When He was at His weakest physically, Satan came and tempted Him in the most grandiose and outlandish manner. Even though Jesus was weak in physical strength, He was more than a conquerer and Satan was no match for the strength Christ had in the Spirit. This is what God is trying to accomplish in each of His children that He brings into the wilderness. “And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.” Galatians 4:6

This concludes part 1 of the wilderness series. If this reading was a blessing to you, please share it with your friends who are going through tough times. We need to encourage each other in these last days. Also, keep us in prayer here in the ministry, as we continue to produce Spirit-filled contents. We will see you again in the wilderness part 2.
